The recent remarks made by Rex Chapman highlighted a noteworthy development in the NBA: the exclusion of white American players from the All-NBA team rosters for the previous ten years. Notably, Gilbert Arenas also shared his take on the No Chill Gill show, mostly agreeing with Chapman’s statements regarding the white American downfall in the NBA.
Rex Chapman was a high school legend and a former NBA player. Having played for the Miami Heat, Charlotte Hornet, and Phoenix Suns, he broke down the current situation in basketball, suggesting white families in the USA don’t encourage their kids, unlike the Europeans.
"We don't put Billy and Johnny and we put them in soccer and we put them in baseball and we put them in lacrosse and tennis and everything else. Basketball, that's for them. It's not for our type. That's f**ked up,"Rex Chapman via ‘Pablo Torre Finds Out’
Gilbert Arenas, who has always never been afraid to put out his unfiltered takes agreed with Chapman. The ex-NBA star also emphasized white Americans got ‘pushed out’ by the Europeans.
"No one really explained what happened to the white American (player)… White parents were discouraging their kids from going down this road in sports."Gilbert Arenas via ‘No Chill Gil’ podcast
In addition, Chapman and Arenas, both asserted how the AAU system in American basketball has hindered young players, especially the white-American players from developing in the sport. Both of them also made a point of how the European white players are now among the elites in decorated basketball leagues.
Also, Arenas is familiar with AAU basketball from firsthand observation and is dissatisfied with the softening of players. Although players are free to choose where they want to play, it is concerning that they are avoiding confrontation and their coaches’ aggression if people want to see more white Americans playing in the NBA.
Nick Young makes huge statement regarding European basketball players after Celtics NBA title victory
Gilbert Arenas and Rex Chapman are not the first NBA players to have taken issue with Europeans dominating in the NBA. Nick Young, the former Lakers star was also delighted to see two Euro stars get knocked out in 2024. The Boston Celtics won the title after defeating the Dallas Mavericks and their star man Luka Doncic.
"Let’s give it up for America. Because we won baby. America won baby. Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown did it for America. They put Luka a**out. Oh my god. I got so tired of everybody talking about these foreigners and sh*t. America is here baby. It’s America’s league baby."Nick Young via Gil’s Arena podcast
On the contrary, leading foreign players like Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Doncic are having a big impact on the NBA, which is becoming a more global league. By hosting games abroad and allowing athletes from different nations to compete, the league has fostered inclusivity.
