One of the highly anticipated fights in the UFC Welterweight division is slowly becoming one of those cursed fights of UFC that never seems to happen. The Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman was booked to defend his title against the number one ranked fighter Gilbert Burns back in July at UFC 251 on UFC Fight Island.

But Burns was tested positive for COVID that time and Jorge Masvidal stepped into a short notice fight against Usman. But Usman defended his title successfully against Gamebred, after this, the fight between Burns and Usman again got again booked for UFC 256 but this time Usman pulled out his name due to an injury.

Now UFC is targeting to book this event again for UFC 258 in February but according to Gilbert Burns, nothing is a done deal yet. In his latest interview with Kumite TV, Burns says “The fight was postponed to January 23, and I was just like, ‘Wow. Ok, no problem. We’re going to keep working and getting better.’ Boom, then they’re targeting February 13 but we still haven’t seen the contract.”

“ But I’m looking forward. I got a good word from Dana and from the UFC that that’s the date they’re looking for. Now I’m just waiting on the contract and getting better”

Burns is training to present the toughest challenge for Usman

Gilbert Burns

Gilbert Burns earned his title shot after defeating fighters like Demain Maia and Tyron Woodley earlier this year but since then he is waiting for the title fight. After Colby Covington defeated Tryon Woodley and Usman pulled out from UFC 256, a lot of people were matching Covington vs Burns for number one contender.

But Burns made it clear that he is already the number one contender and he’ll not face anyone else rather than Usman. Although the date of his match keeps on delaying, but he is training really hard to present the toughest challenge to undefeated UFC Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.
