Gilles Simon sends a heartwarming message to Daniil Medvedev after their split
World No. 7 Daniil Medvedev parted ways with coach Gilles Simon ahead of Rotterdam Open 2025.
Seventh seed Daniil Medvedev recently split from his coach, Gilles Simon, after an early Australian Open exit. Simon, a French former tennis player, started working with Medvedev in December 2023, initially providing tactical assistance remotely during the 2024 Australian Open.
Giles officially joined Medvedev’s coaching team in February 2024, complementing head coach Gilles Cervara. Medvedev had a titleless run in 2024, with a match-win percentage of 68.7%. The Russian’s best results came at the Australian Open and Indian Wells in 2024, where he reached the finals.
Since triumphing at the Rome Masters in May 2023, Medvedev is yet to secure an ATP title. The Russian, who was a finalist at the Australian Open 2024, had an early exit this year at the Melbourne Grand Slam following defeat from a qualifier.
Simon took to X to thank Medvedev and his whole team for their time together and wish them all the best for the future. Medvedev hopes to return to winning ways at the Rotterdam Open.
Daniil Medvedev’s 2025 season
Daniil Medvedev commenced his 2025 season with the Australian Open. In the first round he had a hard fought victory over Thai wildcard Kasidit Samrej, ranked 418th globally. Medvedev won the first set but then dropped the next two sets, and rebounded to claim the final two sets.
This match was infamously marred by an incident where Medvedev, in frustration, smashed a net camera with his racket. This lead to a fine on the Russian for unsportsmanlike conduct.
In the second round, Medvedev faced 19-year-old American qualifier Learner Tien. The match extended into a five-set battle and despite his efforts, Medvedev was unable to overcome Tien, resulting in an unexpected early exit from the tournament.
After the Australian Open, the 28 year old will next compete at the ABN AMRO Open. This hard-court tournament takes place this year from 1-9 February at Rotterdam, Netherlands, and features top players like Carlos Alcaraz, Alex de Minaur, Andrey Rublev, and Holger Rune. In his first match of this tournament, Medvedev will face Swiss wildcard Stan Wawrinka in the Round of 32.
