Reports from AS state that Liverpool’s Dutch midfielder Gini Wijnaldum has agreed for a move to FC Barcelona to reunite with his former national team manager Ronald Koeman. The midfielder’s contract runs out in the summer and he is allowed to sign a pre-contract with any team that wants to sign him and move after his contract expires. Liverpool have tried twice to extend his contract and have been rejected by the Dutchman both the times.
Gini Wijnaldum expects a new contract that will grant him wages on par with club’s top earners
The Dutchman wants his contributions for the club rewarded with a contract that will give him more wages than he is already earning. He wants a contract that will put him in the same bracket as the top earners of the club, namely Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk. While it can be debated whether Gini Wijnaldum deserves such lofty wages, it must be known that he has made an immense contribution this season. Liverpool have been hit by their worst injury crisis in years and were deprived of 16 players at different points of time and still don’t have 6 regular players now.
He was one of the only two midfielders of Liverpool who remained uninjured until now with Curtis Jones the other midfielder as even club captain Jordan Henderson has been injured for some time. The three have been Liverpool’s midfield for a long, long time where there were no substitutes available to make.
As it has been reported, Liverpool’s offers of a contract extension have been met with rejection by the Dutchman and the club hasn’t tried since the start of December. The Dutchman is now available to be signed for a pre-contract where he would join the club on a free transfer. It would see that along with Eric Garcia, FC Barcelona want to sign Gini Wijnaldum and Memphis Depay who will be available for free in the summer- barring any major twists where contract negotiation is successful between the players and their respective clubs.
