Veteran Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell stunned fans with his acrobatic fielding, taking a brilliant catch near the boundary line in a T20I against South Africa. Maxwell’s catch was a pivotal one as it helped the Aussies claim the wicket of Ryan Rickelton, to seal the match.

At the Marrara Cricket Ground in Darwin, Australia was sent in to bat first, but the team suffered a top-order collapse, losing four wickets before the end of the powerplay. Australia was staring at a low total until Cameron Green and Tim David came to the rescue. Green scored a quick 35 off just 13 balls, while David finished as the top-scorer with a stellar 83 off 52 balls, hitting four boundaries and eight sixes.

Tim David continued with his stellar T20 form, having recently hit his maiden hundred during Australia’s recent tour of the West Indies. He brought up his seventh T20I fifty, while helping the home side bring up a respectable 178 runs. In response, South Africa could only manage to score 161 runs in their 20 overs, as they fell short by 17 runs to hand Australia a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series.

Ryan Rickelton was the only bright spot in a poor batting display by the visitors, in a disappointing defeat. Rickelton scored a well-composed 71-run knock off 55 balls, hitting seven boundaries and a six, and was not willing to give up until the end. With 21 needed in the final over of the chase, he however lost his wicket, ending the Proteas’ only hope. He was caught out by Glenn Maxwell, off Ben Dwarshuis‘ delivery.

Maxwell pulled off a moment of disbelief, as he took a breath-taking catch on the boundary line. The stunning catch from the 36-year-old all-rounder, who had a poor outing with the bat otherwise, combined athleticism, quick thinking and timing. Rickelton had launched Dwarshuis’ delivery towards long-on, hoping to clear the boundary. However, Glenn Maxwell, standing inches from the line, had other ideas.

The 36-year-old dived acrobatically in the air, catching the ball with both hands beyond the line. While airborne, he was quickly released the ball before his feet touched the ground outside the playing area. Maxwell then swiftly jumped back inside in time to complete the catch, leaving fans stunned in a fraction of a second. The TV umpire took his time to review the catch but ultimately ruled it legal.

This was notably Glenn Maxwell’s second impressive fielding effort near the boundary line within a month. In the fourth T20I against the West Indies, he had leapt high to take a tough catch at long-on, and before falling over the line, he threw the ball to Cameron Green to complete the dismissal.

Glenn Maxwell Nears Elite T20I Milestone in Australia Versus South Africa Series

One of the most prolific all-rounders, Glenn Maxwell is just a few steps away from joining an elite group of players by reaching a historic T20I milestone. The veteran Australian all-rounder can achieve this feat during his side’s ongoing three-match T20I series against South Africa.

Following the conclusion of the first T20I in Darwin, Maxwell is now just three wickets away from joining an exclusive club that includes Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan, former Pakistani cricketer Mohammed Hafeez, and Malaysian captain Virandeep Singh. If he achieves this, Maxwell would become the fourth player in T20I history to score over 2,500 runs and take more than 50 wickets in the shortest format.

Meanwhile, Glenn Maxwell currently has 47 wickets in 122 T20Is, at an average of 30.06. With the bat, he has scored 2,755 runs at an impressive strike rate of 155.65, including five hundreds and eleven fifties. He is currently ranked as Australia’s third-highest all-time run-getter in the format.
