IPL 2021: “He said it would be wonderful to have me” – Glenn Maxwell reveals Virat Kohli ‘floated’ idea of him joining RCB

Virat Kohli and Glenn Maxwell

Glenn Maxwell had a disastrous Indian Premier League (IPL) season in 2020 as he managed to score just 108 runs for the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) franchise. He could not hit a single six throughout the tournament and was ultimately released by the franchise. At the auction, he was acquired by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for a sum of Rs. 14.25 crores beating out competition from Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

At his new franchise, Maxwell seems to have settled well as he came good in the very first match. The Aussie scored a brisk 39-run knock and played an important role in keeping the scoreboard ticking during the middle-overs in the win over Mumbai Indians (MI). He also hit a huge 100 meter six which was the highlight of his knock as it had skipper Virat Kohli applauding in awe at the shot.

RCB released a video on their social media handle today as a part of their “Bold Diaries” series where Glenn Maxwell talks of how he was signed at the auction. “We had been texting a fair bit. We obviously caught up. We chatted after the ODI and T20I series in Australia. He talked to me about potentially playing for RCB. If I got the opportunity, he said ‘we would love to have you’. But obviously, there was an auction,” Maxwell said.

“He said it would be wonderful to have you. He floated the idea back even then. There was a long process in work. Thankfully, I am playing for RCB now,” he added.

Speaking about the day of the auction when fellow RCB and Australia player Adam Zampa presented him with an RCB cap, he said, “The day of the auction, it was at night time in New Zealand. We were training while in quarantine in New Zealand. Adam Zampa had his RCB hat in his bag, so he took it out and made sure we had a photo. He sent it to Virat and said ‘Let’s get it over the line. Congratulations I have already given him his first cap!'”

“That was before the auction, so it all happened pretty well. It would have looked pretty silly if it didn’t work out that way. He put the picture on afterwards but we took the photo before the auction. Virat said you guys are idiots but in a lovely way,” Maxwell further said.

RCB play Sunrisers Hyderabad today in Chennai.
