Another Ashes year is upon the cricketing world and the hype is very much increasing with each day passing by. The recently concluded England vs. India series also had innumerable mentions of the Ashes, with a few experts also calling it a warm up for the year end affair.

There were keen eyes kept on the English team, with many wanting to know if they have the ideal balance to conquer the Australian supremacy Down Under. Predictions have floating all through social media, and many ex-English and Australian players have weighed in with their opinions. Australian great Glenn McGrath too has given his verdict for the upcoming five match affair in November in a chat with BBC Radio.

It’s very rare for me to make a prediction, isn’t it? And I can’t make a different one – 5-0.

Glenn McGrath said via BBC Radio

McGrath was very blunt in his call for the series. He has backed Australia entirely and, despite England showing a new brand of cricket, feels that Australia will dominate right through the series. A bold and early prediction of 5-0 from McGrath has become one to debate for many others following the series.

McGrath further elaborated why he feels that Australia will dominate right through. The famous Australian quartet of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon has an outstanding record on their home turf.

I’m very confident with our team. When you’ve got Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon firing in their home conditions, it’s going to be pretty tough. Plus, that track record England have had, it’d be interesting to see if they can win a Test.

With the excessive pace and bounce that the Australian wickets generate, the seam bowlers make it very difficult for visiting batters to adjust. Lyon’s second innings’ spin also proves to be very effective with visiting sides getting bundled out rather quickly. McGrath also mentioned that England hasn’t really done well in Australian conditions for a while now.

The famous 2010-11 Ashes was the last time England did well in Australia. Back then, England had won the series 3-1. This lean patch that England has endured over a long time makes it interesting to see if England can turn the tables this time around.

How correct is Glenn McGrath? A look at the recent history between England and Australia in Ashes Cricket

A total of 73 Ashes series have taken place between Australia and England. As the record stands now, Australia leads the tally with 34 series wins. England has 32 series wins to its name. And 7 draws between the two sides.

In recent times, it has been Australia that has heavily dominated the rivalry. Since the 2010-11 win that England had in Australia, the latter has not lost a single home series. At the same time, they have drawn the last two series in England in 2019 and 2023. This means that the last time England won an Ashes series against Australia was back in 2015, a famously fought 3-2 victory in their home conditions.

Australia has only once been on the opposite side of England’s ‘Bazball’ tactics. This 2025 Ashes will be the second time they will face Bazball and the first time in their own backyard. Many pundits and fans feel that this renewed positive approach from England will help them mentally fight the demons in Australia.

The pace and bounce of the Australian pitches, where big scores are regularly scored, might also aid the attacking batters of England. Another very interesting fact is that, in the 39 Test centuries that Joe Root has scored, none have come in Australia. The English modern great will be very instrumental in his team’s chances.
