After suffering a crushing defeat in the 2024 World Series, the New York Yankees lost some of their top names to free agency. One of them was second baseman Gleyber Torres, who was left go from the team. He would later join the Detroit Tigers in the free agency. He has now taken a jab at the Yankees organization.

Torres’ future with the Yankees was one of the talking point for the Bronx Bombers during the 2024 season. Following the acquisition of Jazz Chisholm Jr., there were some talks that the Yankees might not bring back the 2-time All-Star.

That is exactly what happened. The Yankees decided not to bring back Torres and allowed him to explore options regarding his future. He would pen down a 1-year $15 million deal with the Tigers in December, bringing an official end to his Yankees chapter.

In a recent interview with MLB insider Jon Heyman, the 28-year-old star took a jab at his former team. He would make this feelings known with a strong message.

I feel I deserve to be with an organization that wants me. I’m here now and that’s the reason I’m here.

There had been tensions between Gleyber Torres and the Yankees in the 2024 season. The team had asked him to move on from the second base and play as a third baseman. However, he refused do that which led to Chisholm Jr. playing majorly in that third base position.

During his seven-year spell with the Yankees, batted with a .265 average and .775 OPS. He hit 138 home runs for the Bronx Bombers with 15 of them coming last season.

As the offseason started, Gleyber Torres quickly stopped following the New York Yankees on social media. He would later join one of their American League rivals, the Detroit Tigers. Recently, he revealed the reason behind this move.

As per the Venezuelan international, he spoke with a handful of people before making this move. One of them was his former teammate, Gio Urshela, who spent the 2024 season with the Tigers and then the Atlanta Braves. The other one was MLB great and his fellow countrymen, Miguel Cabrera.

In an interview with Chris Young of MLB Network, Torres mentioned that those two, along with Victor Martinez, persuaded him to join the Tigers after he had left the Yankees.

I had a really good conversation with Gio Urshela, for sure, Miguel Cabrera, and also for a long time, Victor Martinez, one of the people to help me during my career. Those three guys playing Detroit, also Miggy, we know the history and how good they play in Detroit. They gave me really good advice.

Gleyber Torres said

Given his experience, Torres is expected to be in a leadership position during the 2025 campaign. So far in the Spring Training, he has made 11 appearances from the plate and has hit 1 home run while driving in 2 runs. He would be hoping to use his experience to help the Tigers reach the postseason again and try to push on for the title.
