The 2024 NFL Draft gave the signal that the New York Giants now wanted to draft a quarterback. It suggested that Daniel Jones and his starting quarterback job were not safe for the upcoming season.

However, with his horrible play as well as his recovery from the torn ACL, the question circulated whether the Giants would play their backups. GM Joe Schoen has now put those speculations to rest.

Yeah, for me, I said it in January after the season. Our expectation was Daniel would be our starter and we brought Drew Lock to be his backup and Tommy is a backup, so that’s where we are and that’s how we’ll move forward this season. Daniel is still under contract for three more years. As it sits today, that’s where we are.
As per transcript received by NBC Sports, the Giants GM said

With this confirmation, he essentially put to rest all the rumors that were doing the rounds since the closing days of last season. Daniel Jones will be their QB1, at least for the coming season.

The rumors coming from the Giants camp were that head coach Brian Daboll was frustrated with Jones. So much so that Russell Wilson was approached to join them. After that deal broke down, rumors floated that the Giants were going to take a quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Now that everything is confirmed, Daniel Jones can rest easy and concentrate on making it into training camp. His play will determine what Joe Schoen talks about at the end of the season.

Daniel Jones has to back up his salary with his play

Last season, prior to his ACL injury, he threw six interceptions in the six games he played. Albeit with just two touchdowns. That form is what caused all those rumors to spread. Now that the decision has been made, it is down to Daniel Jones to ensure his GM and head coach are not let down.

The New York Giants have drafted Malik Nabers to be Jones’ No. 1 target next season. Their offensive should bounce back from a disappointing season last time around. Excuses should be nonexistent for Jones to at least match his previous highs of 3000+ yards.

If not, his roster spot in 2025 will be hard to justify. His $160 million salary is the biggest reason he has to perform. Otherwise, they will cut bait and move on.
