Patrick Mahomes, the star quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs, hailing from Texas has been touted as Tom Brady’s replacement for a long time. As Mahomes stepped in green outfits on Sunday, he had a rare opportunity to take over as the greatest quarterback to have played the game.

The Kansas City Chiefs, who seemed like a dynasty, came crashing down as the Philadelphian defense mounted on the 29-year-old and his fellow Reds. The Eagles cruised to 34 points before the Chiefs were able to retaliate – although, their garbage time efforts went in vain as Nick Sirianni led the Eagles to their second Super Bowl.

Patrick Mahomes had one of his worst days, if not his worst of all time, at Caesars Superdome. Mahomes registered three turnovers including one fumble and two interceptions. He threw his first career postseason pick-six as rookie and birthday boy Cooper DeJean scored his first career TD. Mahomes also had the second-lowest QBR in a Super Bowl since ESPN started the metric in 2006. Overall, the day was a big setback in Mahomes’ hunt to become the game’s GOAT.

Stephen A. Smith, the famed ESPN analyst, noted that Patrick Mahomes looked clueless as the Eagles’ defense mounted immense pressure on him. Mahomes became the second quarterback in Super Bowl history to be sacked six times by four or fewer pass rushers, joining the Cowboys’ Roger Staubach, who faced the same pressure in Super Bowl X against the Steelers.

It was about four dudes on the Philadelphia Eagles defense that b*m-rushed him. And the brother looked demoralized and hopeless inside of five minutes – it was that damn bad.

Stephen A Smith on Patrick Mahomes’ performance

Speaking on First Take, Smith pointed out that although one performance doesn’t define Mahomes, he has been defenestrated from GOAT debates.

He’s phenomenal. He’s great. One game doesn’t make Patrick Mahomes – a three-time Super Bowl MVP – [bad]. We know what that is. But in the end, you talk about that GOAT conversation, that went the hell out the window last night at Super Bowl LIX.

Stephen A. Smith wants to include Joe Montana in GOAT talks after Patrick Mahomes’ setback

Stephen A Smith, on his First Take appearance, also admitted that Joe Montana deserves to be in the discussions of the NFL GOATs alongside Tom Brady.

Legendary quarterback Joe Montana led the San Francisco 49ers throughout the 1980s, guiding the team to four Super Bowl appearances in 1981, 1984, 1988, and 1989. Montana achieved a perfect 4-0 record in those games, throwing 11 touchdowns without a single interception.

We gotta bring Joe Montana back into this conversation because of what we witnessed yesterday. Joe Montana [is] 4-0, 68 per cent completion, 11 touchdowns, not a single interception ever. He’s also a three-time Super Bowl MVP. After this Super Bowl, it’s one thing to be talking about Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady. We talk about, Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, and Joe Montana. Smith said.

Montana is often called the Original GOAT and for the right reasons. The former 49ers quarterback was only the second quarterback to win the Super Bowl as well as an FBS National Championship, following Joe Namath of the New York Jets and the Alabama Crimson Tide. Montana was known to perform under pressure and tantalizing situations. Looking back, one would seriously wonder how Montana was left out of GOAT conversations in the first place.
