The first round of the 2024 Stanley Cup playoffs concluded on Sunday night after the Dallas Stars knocked out the Vegas Golden Knights. The hosts, held on to a 2-1 lead into the end to oust the defending champions.

Having been 2-0 up in the series, the Golden Knights were pegged back by three straight victories of the Stars. This made Game 6 a must-win for the Vegas-based outfit. Goals from Noah Hanifin and captain Mark Stone gave them a 2-0 win and forced Game 7.

In a tight game, 20-year-old Wyatt Johnston gave the Stars the lead in the first period. He would steal the puck away from Jack Eichel and fired a powerful shot past Adin Hill. The visitors went on to level the match in the second period as Brett Howden tucked away the puck for them.

Radek Faksa then stepped up in the third period with a brilliant backhanded goal to give his team the lead again. The Golden Knights kept on pushing but were unable to pull themselves level again and suffered an early elimination from this year’s playoffs.

The victory of the Stars also saw coach Pete Deboer improve his perfect Game 7 record. The 55-year-old now has a 8-0 record when it comes down Game 7 in the NHL. After the game, Deboer was in tremendous joy to get past through to the next round.

Obviously, Really wanted to win this series. We wanted our turn. We felt we did all the right things all year to get the first seed, and then you draw a team like Vegas. I honestly think they’ve got a deeper team than they had last year. To plow through the adversity of being down 2-0, there’s a lot to unpack.
Pete Deboer said in the press conference.

Fan reactions to Golden Knights’ elimination from first round

In the past two-three seasons, the Vegas Golden Knights‘ haven’t been the fan favorites. The NHL fans have time and again attacked the team for their usage of the long term injured reserve (LTIR) list and their spendings in the league.

During Game 1 of this series, Golden Knights’ captain Mark Stone was heavily booed because of this reason. Needless to say, the majority of social media users were somewhat ‘thrilled‘ to see the defending champion crash out of the playoffs.

Fans heavily trolled them for this loss. Several users brought out the usage of LTIR and made jokes on them. One X user, who seemed to have enjoyed this win called them as “frauds” and waved them goodbye.
