Aussie golfer Cameron Smith started 2020 with a bang after clinching the Sentry Tournament of Champions title at Kapalua’s Plantation Course. His compatriot Matt Jones finished third while Spain’s and world number one in PGA rankings, Jon Rahm secured the second spot.

Smith closed out his week with an eight-under-par 65 to finish at a PGA Tour record 34 under and one stroke clear of playing partner Rahm and secure a wire-to-wire victory in Maui after both started the final day in Hawaii sharing the lead. With his iconic victory, Smith earned the biggest single payday of his career, taking home a massive prize money payout of $1.476 million from an overall purse of $8.2 million.

“Hey guys, Cameron Smith here. So good to win the Sentry Tournament of Champions. It’s been a great week here in Hawaii. I love this place so much. It reminds me so much of home and I haven’t been able to get home for a couple of years, so it makes it even better to be here and there were a few Aussies in the crowd egging me on. Yeah, I loved it. I love Hawaii. See you next year,” Smith, 28, said in a video message after the triumph.

Earlier, the Brisbane native Smith had talked about the intense competition he faced and what was going through his mind during the final moments of the tournament.

“Mate, it was intense. Jonny and I played well the whole day and we had Matty in the group in front lighting it up as well,” Smith said moments after this fourth win on the PGA Tour. “Unreal round, something I’ll never forget for sure.”

“I was just trying to hit one shot at a time, I know that sounds cliche. We spoke about it earlier in the day that we wanted to get to 35 under. We missed it by one so in that sense disappointing but happy to come away with the W,” he added.
