“Confidence is getting better” – India’s Anirban Lahiri grabs top spot at Players Championship ahead of Monday finish

Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri, who holds world rank 322, is on a roll at the end of Sunday’s play. Lahiri was in the sole lead at The Players Championship 2022 as he raced to the top with five birdies in the opening nine holes of Round 3 with seven holes left to play today.

The 34-year-old Lahiri (67-73 and 5 under through 11) at 9-under took a one-shot lead over American duo Harald Varner III (69-69 and 2-under through 9 in third) and Tom Hoge (66-71 and 1-under through 9 in third).

During an interaction at the end of the day’s play, Anirban mentioned that a change to the irons made the difference to his game.

I think the biggest difference was we made a change to the irons this week,” Lahiri said after his first round. “I changed the weight. The irons have been my weak link, and they came out much better. I feel like my confidence is getting better, which is really positive.”

“Frustrating when not getting the results despite not making bad swings”

Lahiri is currently using a Srixon ZX Utility 4-iron and Srixon Z945 irons for his 5-iron through pitching wedge this week. He further used lead tape to add weight to his clubheads.

The Pune native golfer added: “It’s really something that’s minor. I’ve added maybe 3 1/2 grams of weight to all of my irons. … These last couple of weeks, especially, we’ve been playing really tough golf courses, and you hit it 4 or 5 yards offline and you can make 6 instead of 3. And I had a lot of that happen to me. It’s frustrating when you know you’re not making bad swings and you’re not getting the results you want, so it’s equally satisfying when it comes together like this.”
