“Didn’t get here alone” – Tiger Woods delivers emotional speech at World Golf Hall of Fame induction
Tiger Woods
The 15-time Majors champion and arguably the greatest golfer of all-time, Tiger Woods was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame on Wednesday. However, he couldn’t hold back his years and choked after a moving speech by his 14-year-old daughter Sam.
The 46-year-old Woods recalled battling racism as a junior player and the support of his parents, coaches and friends during his emotional speech. But the American golfer didn’t touch on any of his 82 victories on the PGA Tour or his 15 majors, or the eight surgeries he endured along the way.
“I didn’t get here alone,” said Woods. “I had unbelievable parents, mentors and friends who supported me in the darkest of times and celebrated the highest of times.
“It’s actually a team award. All of you allowed me to get here and I just want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
Sam shares amazing story about the day she was born
Sam Woods, fittingly dressed in red, was as poised in her speech and presentation as her father at the golf course. In her speech, the teenager told an amazing story about the day she was born, the same day that happened to be the final round of the 2007 U.S. Open at Oakmont.
“In 2007, my dad got himself in position to make an 18-foot putt to force a U.S. Open playoff, which he missed by a foot,” she recalled. “He then had to rush to the airport, flew from Pittsburgh to Orlando and drove to the Winnie Palmer Hospital. Within five minutes of walking into the hospital room, still wearing his red golf shirt, on June 18th, I was born.
“He may have lost that day, but he won the greatest gift of all.”
“Crap,’’ a watery-eyed Woods said, trying to lighten the moment. “I just lost a bet to [Steve] Stricker that I wouldn’t cry. Thank you, Sam.”
