The name of Donald Trump is no stranger to controversy. The ex-USA president is one of the most popular people on this planet. Much of this popularity has been because of politics career and his various shenanigans along the way. The 77-year-old also has his fair share of controversies regarding golf.
It is no secret that Trump is a massive fan of golf. The former leader has engaged in this sport for a long time. He owns several courses across the country and the world and plays on them regularly. However, according to several reports, he is not known to be an honest player.
Several people have called him to be a “cheater“. Many of them have also alleged that the stories he says are all lies. Trump has also been accused of cheating to win on multiple times. Let’s delve more into this and explore the top 5 cheating golf controversies of the former US President.

The astonishing switch
Donald Trump is said to be very good at golf. He was so good at this sport that he once defeated two players on the same occasion. According to author Rick Reilly, Trump once defeated Ted Virtue and his son after challenging time to a club championship. Virtue, an investor had won a championship when Trump was out of town so he claimed that Virtue never actually won the championship.
During the game, both Ted Virtue and his son hit their balls in the green fairways while Trump found his ball in the pond. Here comes the astonishing switch. The then-US President walks over to Virtue’s son’s ball and hits it while claiming it was his caddie. Meanwhile, Trump’s caddie claims that the kid’s ball landed in the pond. No surprise that the national leader scored from it and won the championship.
Almost beating Tiger Woods in a friendly game
When it comes to golf, there are arguably very few players better than Tiger Woods. So to beat Woods in his own game was going to be tough. Trump though had other ideas and used his wits to outsmart the golfing veteran.
While playing a round with Woods and his partner Dustin Johnson, Trump teamed up with Brad Faxon, a Fox analyst. Due to their opponents, Trump and his partner were allowed to tee from the middle. What happened? He hit two balls in the ponds consecutively. However, he completes lies on the first water ball as the golfers are not looking at them and takes two extra shots. When asked about the score, he proudly replies “four-for-a-three” instead of the actual seven.
Shooting a low 70 at the hardest course
In golf, the lower the score is, the better the performance of a player. A score of 70 is not usually good enough to win except for a few courses. One of them is the Winged Foot course in New York. In 2006 US Open winner Geoff Ogilvy posted a score of 71, 70, 72, and 72 to win the event here. Bryson DeChambeau won with a score of 68, 68, 70 and 67. This suggests that conquering this course is not easy.
At a course where professional players were struggling, Trump claimed that he hit a low 70s. His reason for this was that he had played there often. However, Rick Reilly’s book claims that caddies nicknamed him “Pele” as he played like the football great as he kicked the ball around the course rather than actually hitting it with the club.
Without tournaments without even showing up
Winning tournaments in golf is never easy. A player requires four rounds of great play to see off their challengers. This is one of the main reasons why many have never won a championship. However, Trump did not even need to turn up and win at the 2018 Senior Club championship in Palm Beach.
When the Senior Championship took place at the Palm Beach golf course (which he owns) he was not available due to his political career. However, Trump would take to his social media and claim he won the Senior Championship while beating several players. He would use his first-round score to determine himself the winner and win the championship without even showing up.
His record in club championships
By this time it should not come as a surprise that Trump has won several championships. Well, at least that’s what he claims. He recently claimed that he won the Senior Championship again while posting a score of 67. However, in one viral video, he was seen hitting a shank. So did he actually win these championships?
As per Reilly, whenever Trump opens a golf course, he plays the official opening round and then just calls himself the first club champion. Whether this is even valid or not is up to debate. This though puts a serious mark against his actual ability to win any club championships.
