This past Monday, Rory McIlroy overcame J.J. Spaun to win his second title at The Players Championship. This turned out to be the first time where he had won two competitions before the month of April. A golf insider has now backed him to win “more majors” following this triumph.

After a final-round collapse in the 2011 Masters Tournament, McIlroy clinched his first major championship a few months later as he won the U.S. Open. The North Irish golfer then won three more major titles by 2014.

Following his triumph at the 2014 PGA Championship, McIlroy has not won another major. He has had some close calls in recent years. However, a fifth major title is still eluding him.

Golf insider Brad Faxon, who also works as the putting coach of McIlroy, backed him to win “more majors” going forward. While speaking on Golf Today, Faxon expressed that the former World No.1 golfer has the “enough game” to go on and win the majors again.

He certainly has enough game to win multiple more Majors and not making just the Masters is the only important thing to me. I have full confidence that he’s going to win more Majors plural and if it’s not the Masters this year.

Brad Faxon said

The Masters Tournament is one title that McIlroy needs to achieve history. A win at the Augusta National would see him become just the 6th golfer and the first since Tiger Woods to complete the career grand slam. Only five golfers have managed to win all the four major championships in their career.

McIlroy’s best finish in this event is the runner-up finish, which he claimed during the 2022 event. He started the day 10 shots behind eventual winner Scottie Scheffler but ended the day just 3 shots behind him.

PGA Tour veteran recently claimed that Rory McIlroy needs to win a major to call 2025 a successful year

While Rory McIlroy maybe ranked as the 2nd best player in the world right now, the way he has played, some believe that he should be the No.1 player. The 4-time major champion claimed his 27th and 28th PGA Tour title this year with a win at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Players Championship. However, a PGA Tour veteran believe that he needs to win a major to call this year a successful one.

In his last 25 starts worldwide, McIlroy has 5 wins, 3 runners-up, 14 Top-5 and 22 Top-25 finishes. He has only missed the cut in one of them.

Despite this great number, tour veteran Brendon de Jonge believes he “still needs to win a major” for this year to be considered successful.

Having two big events under his belt already, if he doesn’t get a Major championship, it will not be considered a successful year for Rory.

Brendon de Jonge said on SiriusXM PGA Tour radio

The major championships this year will take place at locations where he has done well in the past and knows a bit about the course. Among the Open Championship could be an emotional one for him as it will take place at Royal Portrush, in his home country of Northern Ireland.

The triumph on Monday saw McIlroy pocket $4.5 million, the biggest winning cheque on the PGA Tour at the moment. This saw him overtake Phil Mickelson in the second place for the most career earnings.

The winning amount from this event saw McIlroy’s total career earnings rise to $99.7 million. Mickelson previously sat 2nd in the table with $96.6 million from his 666 official starts. McIlroy could soon become just the 2nd player after Tiger Woods to earn over $100 million while playing on the tour.

McIlroy has committed to play in the Houston Open next week. With the form he is in at the moment, a positive result from this event could see him cross the $100 million mark before teeing off at the Masters Tournament.
