Sometimes in golf, a person needs a little bit of luck to win. Lady luck was certainly on Brian Campbell‘s side as he got fortunate with a break in the 2nd playoff hole. Following his win, a golf insider labeled this triumph as a “life changer”.
Before this event, Campbell had never won in any PGA Tour-sanctioned event. After a score of 64 in the third round, he found himself competing for the title on Sunday.
He would go head-to-head with rookie Aldrich Potgieter in the final round. After both of them finished 20-under par for the event, they would go into a playoff round.
In the second playoff round, Campbell probably had the break of his career. His tee shot was destined to go out of bounds. However, with luck on his side, the ball would deflect off a tree and fall back on the greens. He went on to birdie that hole and claimed his 1st PGA Tour win.
Luckiest break ever?!

Campbell had never won on the Korn Ferry Tour. As for the PGA Tour, he had not even finished in the Top 10. Now, not only did he claim his first victory, he also secured his PGA Tour card until 2027. On top of that, he even earned an invitation for the Masters Tournament at the Augusta National.
While reflecting on his win, Golf Insider Dan Rapaport called it a “life changer“. He would speak on Campbell’s past performance and how this win was not a “narrative changer” or “legacy changer“.
Not every win on Tour is a life changer. They’re often legacy changers, or narrative changers, but not life changers. Brian Campbell’s win today in Mexico is a life changer. 31 years old. Until today didn’t have a single top 10 on the PGA Tour. He never won on the Korn Ferry Tour, where he made 159 starts and made $1,184,715. Now he’s got his PGA Tour card through 2027, a Masters invite and a $1.26 million check.

Following the win, Campbell acknowledged that he hit a bad tee shot at the 18th hole.
You’ve got to get those breaks sometimes. Unfortunately I hit a really bad tee shot there, caught the tree, was able to keep it in play and get ourselves in a good position to get a wedge and keep the pressure on. I was just so happy that I was able to kind of stay in it to the end.

Campbell has now joined Thomas Detry in an exclusive PGA Tour winners club with this win at the Mexico Open. He is now the second player to become a first-time winner during the 2025 season. Detry had won the WM Phoenix Open two weeks ago at the TPC Scottsdale by finishing 24-under for the tournament.
