KPMG parts ways with Phil Mickelson after “reckless” comments
Phil Mickelson was associated with KPMG for last 16 years
Veteran golfer Phil Mickelson has grabbed the headlines for all the wrong reasons in the last few weeks. He had earlier issued some controversial remarks for the PGA Tour while backing the proposed Super League funded by the Saudi Arabian cash. Meanwhile, one of the top consulting firms KPMG, which served as a long-time sponsor for Mickelson, has decided to end the partnership.
“KPMG U.S. and Phil Mickelson have mutually agreed to end our sponsorship effective immediately. We wish him the best,” the organization said in a statement. KPMG also reportedly contacted Mikelson’s club supplier, Callaway, before coming to this conclusion and making its decision regarding Mickelson.
Reacting to this outcome, Mickelson said of his comments to author and golf writer Alan Shipnuck, “I’m beyond disappointed and will make every effort to self-reflect and learn from this.”
Phil Mickelson announces break from golf
The six-time major champion has also announced a break from golf after a lengthy apology over “reckless” comments about the upcoming super league.
Phil Mickelson took to his Twitter handle and wrote: “Although it doesn’t look this way now given my recent comments, my actions throughout this process have always been in the best interest of golf, my peers, sponsors, and fans.
“There is the problem of off-record comments being shared out of context and without my consent, but the bigger issue is that I used words I sincerely regret that do not reflect my true feelings or intentions.”
Earlier, the California native had received massive criticism from some of the top players and other members of the golf community. The likes of Rory McIlroy and Billy Horschel didn’t shy away from calling Mickelson “naive, selfish, egotistical, and ignorant” for saying many lies to demean the PGA Tour.
