Australian professional golfer Adam Scott talks about how he thought he could never achieve World No.1 spot during the Tiger Woods era, after debuting in the mid-2000 season. Scott expressed his desire for the No.1 spot after watching Greg Norman dominate the sports like never before.

However, by the time Scott secured his place among the Top 10 golfers, Tiger Woods had already taken the World No.1 spot. He dominated the spot, changing the course of the sport in the process. With Woods turning professional in 1996, the then-young 20-year-old contributed much to the sport.

Even amid recent PGA Tour changes, the league expressed how much they are thankful for Woods’ contribution to the sport. Especially following LIV Golf’s inception in 2022. In 2004, when Scott reached his Top 10 spot, he admitted feeling the No.1 spot was an impossible dream.

Adam Scott said, “The reality of turning pro a couple years after Tiger Woods” felt like it became a decade’s gap, and his dream to reach the top spot “was gone and not possible”. Scott who looked up to Greg Norman stated that prior to Woods dominating the greens he wanted to achieve the No.1 spot.

It’s childhood dreams come true. They were my dreams as a kid, watching Norman be No.1 and wanting to aspire to that myself,” the 2023 Wyndham Championship participant noted. But eventually, in 2014, everything seemed to have worked out for Scott.

He became the World No.1 golfer, the 2nd Australian to be ranked after Norman in 1998. “I played my best golf a little later into my career and managed to find myself at No.1”. One of his notable wins was in 2013 when Scott won The Masters at Augusta National. Following his win, he swiftly jumped to being World No.3 and entered 2nd in 2014.

The Players Championship proved to be a game-changer for Adam Scott as he took the top spot from Woods on 18 May. After rigorous practice and unyielding motivation, he also got crowned the win at Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

The Australian proudly stated that “it wasn’t just overnight” but a culmination of efforts that took him to the No.1 spot. Currently, the top spot is occupied by Scottie Scheffler, followed by Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm as 2nd and 3rd. Adam Scott is currently ranked 39th.

Scott commented, “I think overall though the difference between me then and now is I’m better in some areas and a little less consistent in other areas, and that’s with maybe just life coming into play as well.” He’ll be now focusing on Wyndham Championship, bringing out the best play he can on the greens.
