Adrian Meronk becomes the 2nd LIV Golf player to be penalized for slow play on the field. He had to give up more than $200,000 due to rules and tied for 6th place in the event. From the event’s $25 million prize purse, the Polish golfer bagged $508,750, as per NBC Sports.

With a faster start, the golfer could have been tied for 5th with Jon Rahm soloing the spot. Unlike the PGA Tour, LIV Golf has a no-tolerance for slow play policy and it made it clear on Sunday. Meronk’s group with Rahm and Kevin Na was given a pace-of-play warning by the on-field officials after the 10th hole.

Meronk was slapped with a one-stroke penalty in the final round of Jeddah and his fall cost him quite a bit of money. It was LIV’s 2nd time issuing a slow-play penalty, the first being in Spain last year to Richard Bland. Bland was also assessed a one-stroke penalty for taking 84 seconds to play his tee shot at LIV Golf Andalucia.

Meronk’s penalty pushed him 10-under in the event, seven strokes behind winner Joaquin Niemann. According to LIV Golf’s pace of play, a player can’t take more than 40 seconds for each stroke. However, an additional 10 seconds is added to players who are the first to play any stroke within their group.

Meronk’s penalty on the par-5 18th hole landed him with a score of 5 following an initial score of 4. As per reports, the golfer took 2 minutes while playing his 2nd shot, going over LIV’s pace-of-play rules. Unlike LIV, the PGA Tour has not penalized any players for slow play in an individual tournament since Glen Day in 1995.

Golf rule differences between LIV Golf vs. PGA Tour

Although Glen Day was penalized in 1995, no players in recent years have faced slow-play fines. However, it is worth noting the 2021 USPGA Championship where John Catlin was assessed with a penalty, although the major is not run by the PGA Tour. LIV Golf on the other hand is quite strict with its pace-of-play rule.

Meronk who recently signed with LIV Golf seems to have already gone on the wrong side of the referees. Although LIV is not concerned with other infringements like voice audible obscenities, the PGA Tour is strict on this term. The Tour will punish golfers using indecent terms on broadcasts. One X user noted, “Load of bollocks” as LIV issued a penalty on Meronk.

Brooks Koepka who is one of the outspoken golf personalities on the slow-play topic once stated that he would start stroking the ball as “taking a while, I just think, unnecessary.” While players and fans may have different views on the subject, LIV has made its stand very clear on its no-tolerance policy if any golfer breaks their play rules.
