Anirban Lahiri, the LIV Golf pro has been axed off by the title sponsor of the Tiger Woods PGA Tour event, Hero World Challenge. This isn’t much of a surprise, and the reasons quoted here seem to be somewhat obvious. Anirban’s association with the Saudi-backed multimillion-dollar tour has become a sticking point, finally making Anirban’s exit obvious.

In recent reports, Anirban Lahiri has been having a hard time due to various other brands parting ways with him. Mastercard and long-time sponsor of the golfer Hero Motocorp had reportedly axed their association with Lahiri in the recent past. Even with all the turmoil, he managed to make as much as $1,812,500 on his LIV Debut in September.

Anirban Lahiri’s history with the PGA Tour

Anirban Lahiri has had his best days on the Asian Tour emerging as the seven-time winner and only the third Indian golfer to make a niche at the Masters. He landed in the top 100 of the Official World Golf Ranking, in 2014. He will be seen swinging his golf stick at the LIV Golf Bangkok, with Paul Casey and Charles Howell III.

Alongside all this, 2016 is the year when Anirban Lahiri associated himself with the PGA Tour. Although he is a LIV Golf pro, he hasn’t been able to score a victory on the American circuit. He has won two European Tour events and also missed the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass by a fine line, landing second after Cameron Smith.

It does look like the world is closing down on him, but the fortitude he still displays and the associations he continues to keep are certainly his bright path.

When asked about Mastercard and Hero Motocorp parting ways with Anirban, he said, “I am very grateful for the support I have received over the years from both Hero and Mastercard. Any corporate that supports golf should be celebrated. That’s all I want to say.”
