After the final round of the Cognizant Classic was delayed due on Sunday, the tournament resumed on Monday. Going into the new week, Austin Eckroat was leading the event by one stroke. He did not let this momentum slip away and emerged victorious to claim his first PGA Tour title.
The 25-year-old started the fifth day of the event while being 15-under. With eleven holes left to play, the American golfer kept on moving forward. He would card a final round score of 4-under 67 to take home the top prize and finished three shots ahead of runners-up, Erik van Rooyen and Min Woo Lee.
Eckroat was able to conquer both the strong weather conditions and the dangerous “The Bear Trap” with relative ease and fired five birdies and one bogey in the final round. Following the event, the golfer expressed his happiness with his triumph and informed how this was his first win since 2019.
This has always been my dream, to win on the PGA Tour. And just to win, I haven't won since 2019 -- it was a college event. It's just been so long. I'm just so happy.Austin Eckroat on his win as per Golf Channel.
This victory of Eckroat sees him collect a cheque of $1.62 million from the $9 million purse. As he now wanders off to celebrate this victory with his family and friends, fans on the internet have been less than happy to see him come on top.
Fans react to Austin Eckroat’s maiden PGA Tour win
Fans on social media have not been very kind to Austin Eckroat. Despite the American golfer claiming his maiden title, this fairytale story failed to win over the hearts of golf enthusiasts.
A major reason for their unhappiness is due to the fact that no well established name has so far emerged as the winner on the tour events this year.
Fans pointed this out and attacked the tour for their product. One fan wrote, “The tour is in shambles” and was left unimpressed. Some threw out sarcastic remarks on how well the tour has been run, while others called it the “Korn Tour” in reference to the Korn Ferry events.
Here are some reactions from X regarding Eckroat’s win:
Eckroat is now the fourth first-time winner on the PGA Tour this season. He joins Jake Knapp, Matthieu Pavon and Nick Dunlap in this list who came out as winners on the Mexico Open, Farmers Insurance Open and the American Express Championship respectively.
While the fans may not be impressed by his win, the golfer would likely try to forget it and move on. His victory has also earned him a trip to The Masters for the first time in his career, thus giving him a chance to showcase his skills on the biggest stage of golf.
