Australian golfer and LPGA legend Jan Stephenson have recently been diagnosed with breast cancer, as ABC News reports. She is a three-time major champion and a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame.
As per reports, Stephenson’s Crossroads Foundation, a charity organization to support disabled military veterans and first responders, has stated that the Australian golfer is now in Stage 3 of cancer.
Stephenson, aged 71, is now currently under treatment and will undergo chemotherapy and radiation within the next two weeks. Following this news, the golf community has started showering their concern and support for the golfing legend. In a statement, she thanks all her supporters, saying, “It means so much to me for all my friends and family to lend so much support. See you on my next downhill and downwind hole!”

As the executive vice president of Stephenson’s Crossroads Foundation, Michael Vandiver puts it, it is nearly impossible to describe the impeccable contributions that Stephenson has made to the golfing community. Revered by many sportspersons from both PGA and LPGA, she has 16 LPGA victories and 3 major championship titles.
In her statement, she further adds, “I have had some negative challenges in my career and managed to survive. This is just another tough hole that is ‘Uphill and Against the Wind.’ See you on my next downhill and downwind hole!”
This just shows her determination to fight back against her illness and come stronger in front of the world. The WPGA Tour Australia CEO Karen Lunn has also acknowledged the sheer importance and value of the golfing legend and stated that this news was a shock for everyone within the industry.
In her statement, she says, “We love Jan. I just know that she’ll face it head-on, and she’ll be trying to beat it like she’s beaten everything else in her life. I’m sure that I speak for everyone in the industry and the golf world in wishing her a speedy recovery.”
Jan Stephenson is best known for winning all of her three majors consecutively within three years. She won the Peter Jackson Classic in 1981, followed by the 1982 LPGA Championship, and lastly, the US Women’s Open in 1983.
Stephenson was one of the most dominant players in the course, winning around 41 titles throughout the 1980s. However, her injuries from 1987 onwards started plaguing her career and did not let her achieve significant success going on to the 1990s.
She has created history by becoming the first female golfer to participate in the Turtle Bay Championship from the Champions Tour in 2003. She has also played a significant role in establishing the Women’s Senior Golf Tour as well.
The golf community is hoping to see a stronger and healthier Jan Stephenson once she recovers from her illness.
