Just like that the final major of the year has come to an end. The Open Championship was filled with action, thriller, and drama as golfers gave their all. Of these players, one emerged as the favorite from the second round and did not flatter from there on. After years of hardships, 36-year-old Brian Harman clinched his first major title following a dominating performance.
The American international had been on the field for a long time. He though like many others suffered heartbreaks in the past tournament. Before this, his best major performance was a runner-up spot at the US Open n 2017. The two-time PGA Tour winner also ended a six-year drought for a championship after he swept home the claret jug.
Harman had established a five-stroke lead by the end of round two. From there on, he continued to march away from the others. At the conclusion of round three, his lead was still intact. Despite receiving several heckles from the crowd, Harman kept his cool and composure. Following Jon Rahm’ impressive round-three performance, many thought there could still be a twist.
In the final round, Harman did slip up early on. A bogey on the fifth closed the gap to three strokes. Fortunately for Harman, he regained his confidence and further extended the lead to six at the end. He finished with a score of 13-under par overall to claim the trophy. Jon Rahm, Sepp Straka, Jason Day and Tom Kim all finished tied for the runners-up spot.
Twitter reacts as Brain Harman emerges as unlikely winner
Winning a major in golf is the dream of every golfer growing up. Like many others, Harman had a similar dream. Currently ranked 26th in golf rankings, the American International emerged as the unlikely winner, given his previous track record at major competitions. This turned out to be the third straight major win by an American following the triumph of Brooks Koepka and Wyndham Clark at the PGA Championship and US Open respectively.
“I’m going to have me a few pints from this trophy, I believe,” Harman said after winning the coveted claret jug. “The golf course was a real test. It was set up so great even with the weather,” he added before thanking the fans and all those who rooted for him. Here are some reactions from Twitter surrounding his impressive win at the Royal Liverpool course.
His victory also scripted another record. He became the oldest first-time major winner since Sergio Garcia triumphed at the 2017 Masters. Harman’s previous victory also came in 2017 when he won the Wells Fargo Championship. His stock is now on the rise and with such a dominating performance, he has also emerged as a likely candidate for the Ryder Cup.
