After cruising to an incredible four-stroke victory at the Cazoo Open presented by Gareth Bale at Celtic Manor, Callum Shinkwin won his second DP World Tour Championship. After a struggle with playing partners Julien Guerrier and Connor Syme in the final round, Shinkwin mixed six birdies with five bogeys to shoot a one-under 70 and finish the tournament on 12 under.

The world No. 304’s closest rival was Syme, who shot a three-under 68. Guerrier fell back into a five-way tie for third after battling to a final-round 76.“I feel great, even though I had a few shots of a lead heading into the back nine it’s still not easy, especially when Connor then made a charge,” Shinkwin said. “There was a lot of pressure still and even down the last, it’s not an easy hole, a lot of people have made a high number there even if they’ve hit the fairway”.

“The scores haven’t been there before this, but this week was my week. Winning anywhere is fantastic, it’s a great feeling, winning with family and friends here means so much more.” When Guerrier bogeyed the first, Shinkwin’s overnight advantage doubled. However, the Englishman dropped a stroke at the next after taking three chips from the back of the green and slipped into a tie for the lead when his playing partner aced the same par-five.

Guerrier fell deeper as he three-putted the fifth hole for yet another bogey after failing to get out of the sand to rescue par on the third. Shinkwin then sank a shot from 15 feet to move three ahead. Shinkwin opened a temporary six-shot lead after making birdies at holes five and six, holed from a similar distance at hole seven, then had back-to-back bogeys at holes seven and eight before capping off a tumultuous front-nine of 35 with a 10-foot birdie at hole nine’s par five.

After making a birdie to start his back nine, Guerrier fell five back as Shinkwin took advantage of the next par-five. The Frenchman’s hopes were then dashed when he found water off the 13th tee, leading to a double-bogey five.

Syme cut the lead in half by scoring three straight birdies from the 15th after Shinkwin failed to save par from the greenside bunker but temporarily went back six in front with the birdie. Shinkwin’s birdie from close range at the 15th was negated by a bogey at the following hole.

He then holed from 10 feet at the par-3 17th to save par and gain a three-shot lead going into the par-five last. Syme dropped back to eight under after hitting his third ball into the sand on the 18th hole, making a bogey that allowed Shinkwin to secure the victory and widen the margin of victory. Shinkwin two-putted for a final par from 20 feet to complete the round.

Along with Andy Sullivan, David Dixon, Lucas Bjerregaard, and Renato Paratore, Guerrier bogeyed his penultimate hole to drop into a tie for third. Renato Paratore had the lowest round of the day despite shooting a five-under 66 that included a bogey. As Nacho Elvira, the defending winner fell to tied-12th after matching Paul Waring’s score of 71, he made three bogeys in his next four holes, dropping him to the eighth position.
