In an episode of the Golf Subpar Podcast, professional golfer Camilo Villegas recounted an engaging anecdote that occurred beyond the greens. The event involved the iconic Tiger Woods and his private aircraft, along with an incident with a bottle of red wine. The tale dates back to 2008 when Villegas was invited to participate in a skins game.

At that juncture, Villegas was under the management of IMG and his schedule was exceedingly packed, rendering the prospect of attending an additional event seemingly unfeasible. A commitment immediately before and subsequently after an event in Australia posed a logistical conundrum. Resourcefully, Villegas approached Woods for a lift to Perth for the impending tournament.

To his relief, Woods acquiesced, on the condition Villegas play in the skins match. Post-event, Villegas found himself aboard Woods’ elite jet, alongside his caddie Steve Williams and his manager Mark Steinberg. Exhausted from the activities, Villegas yearned for rest. When offered a beverage by an attendant, he initially opted for water.

However, Woods, encouraging a celebration of the victory at the skins game, prompted Villegas to choose wine instead. Consequently, Villegas obliged and was served an ample glass of red wine. While conversing and preparing for takeoff, Villegas inadvertently disregarded the wine, resulting in an unfortunate spill as the plane commenced its ascent.

With the spillover of red wine, a chagrined Villegas found himself in an awkward predicament, to which Woods casually reacted with a dry “nice” reply, amplifying Villegas’ unease. He described a nervous perspiration over the accident. This incident paints a picture not merely of Woods’ generosity but also of the camaraderie and unforeseen moments that can transpire among athletes off the field.

The regrettable event plunged Villegas into deep distress. When the cleanup crew arrived, Villegas too knelt to assist, but his efforts proved fruitless. “I spent roughly 40 minutes on the floor, attempting to eradicate the stain,” he recollects. “It had affected the side panel, the chair, even the carpet – it was stubborn.” In his exasperation, he finally suggested to Woods, “Brother, why not simply have this professionally cleaned and bill me for the costs?

Woods’ response was not forthcoming for over two months. However, during an event hosted by Woods at Sherwood Country Club, Villegas discovered an envelope affixed to his locker. Inside was the cleaning invoice amounting to $25,000. When Villegas moved to settle the exorbitant bill, he learned that Woods’ account was replete and could not take further deposits. To this day, the matter of whether Woods had enacted a jest on him remains an enigma to Villegas.
