Celia Barquin Arozamena was a student at Iowa State University and the current European Ladies’ Amateur Championship when in a shocking turn of events, she was found murdered at the Coldwater Golf Links in Ames in 2018.

A homeless man was later charged for the crime as authorities said puncture wounds in the golfer’s body could have been caused by a knife with a blade at least 4 inches long. The 22-year-old Celia Barquin was primarily seen missing some clothing when she was discovered in a sports bra and a golfing skirt, authorities at the time had said.

The perpetrator, Collin Daniel Richards, also 22, had no known address.

“We are all devastated. Celia was a beautiful person who was loved by all her team-mates and friends. She loved Iowa State and was an outstanding representative for our school. We will never forget her competitive drive to be the best and her passion for life,” Iowa State head women’s golf coach Christie Martens said in a statement in September 2018.

Legendary Spanish golfer Sergio Garcia had met Celia Barquin

Former major winner Sergio Garcia had also expressed condolences, saying he had the pleasure of once meeting Celia Barquin and knew that she was a very special person.

“Heartbroken over what happened to #CeliaBarquinArozamena I had the pleasure of meeting her and I know she was a special person. Sending my thoughts and prayers to her family and loved ones in this difficult time,” Garcia wrote on Twitter.

Celia’s victory at the European Ladies’ Amateur event meant that she had secured a place in the Women’s British Open at Woburn for 2019. She had also recently advanced to Stage II of the LPGA Tour Qualifying Tournament.

The golfer had concluded her Iowa State career (2015-18) with a fourth-straight NCAA Regional appearance and had just earnt All-Big 12 Team honors for the third time (2015, 2016, 2018), becoming one of only two players in the varsity’s history to record the feat.

Following Celia Barquin’s demise, the women’s golf team of Iowa State pulled out of the East & West Match Play in Ann Arbor, Michigan to grieve her loss.
