“I can’t wait to get over there”- 2 time Masters Champion Bubba Watson reported to leave the PGA Tour for LIV Golf

According to reports, Bubba Watson will reportedly quit the PGA Tour for the LIV Golf Invitational Series and make his debut during the Labor Day Weekend matchup outside of Boston for the Saudi Arabia-sponsored upstart league. Due to a damaged meniscus, the two-time Masters winner has been out since May. During the Labor Day Weekend competition, which will take place at The International in Bolton, Massachusetts, he will reportedly serve as the captain of one of the LIV Golf teams.

Numerous well-known athletes, like Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, and Sergio Garcia have already switched to LIV Golf. Watson, who supposedly is the most recent golfer to quit the PGA Tour, gave an explanation of his reasons for considering doing so, despite the fact that the organisation is supported by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

“They started with women’s golf, started supporting the women’s golf (through a series of events on the Ladies European Tour) and then they started supporting men’s golf. There’s women’s tournaments already that they sponsor. Trying to grow the game. They’re trying to change industry over there, bring golf, bring tourism to Saudi Arabia with the beautiful beaches that they already have,” said reports to James Corrigan of The Telegraph.

The government has been charged with sportswashing for allegedly utilising the new league to improve its public image. When Watson talked, according to Harig, it was unclear what the PGA Tour would do with players who desired to compete in LIV Golf events. Players will apparently have to pick between the two options.

LIV Golf has a lot of extra cash to spend. Notable is the $2 billion investment made by the Public Investment Fund in the LIV Series in May. LIV announced that in 2023 it would host 14 tournaments with a total prize pool of $405 million. Watson would reportedly make around £40 million (about $48.6 million) as a result of the deal.

“It will be interesting to go over there and play, but also see the beauty of other parts of the world that God’s created,” Watson said. “I can’t wait to get over there. Hopefully the tour lets us go. Again, the charity dollars is what’s most important, so the more money I can get in my hands, the more I can give away. So it’s an honor and a privilege if they let me go over there and play.”
