“More money than the last 4 years at PGA”: Charl Schwartzel pockets $4.75 million after winning first round of Saudi backed LIV Golf Series
Charl Schwartzel
The Saudi backed LIV Golf series has got off to quite a controversial start, as 17 golfers who made the switch got suspended indefinitely by the PGA Tour. However, the triumph seemed to overshadow the tension in the golf world as Charl Schwartzel took the first round of the series.
The first tournament of the LIV Series began at the Centurion club, and went on from June 9th to 11th just outside London. Schwartzel had resigned himself from the PGA Tour before coming to play in the controversial series. However it seemed to have paid off, literally- as he pocketed a total of $4.75 million. Schwartzel took $4 million for winning the tournament individually, and won’t $750,000 for taking the team prize.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I think we could play for that much money in golf. Where the money comes from is not something… that I’ve ever looked at playing in my 20-year career. I think if I start digging everywhere where we played, you could find fault in anything,” said Schwartzel to news.sky.com, talking about the three days of play.
Twenty golfers have now said to defect from the PGA Golf Series, but none of them are from the top 10. The defectors who have faced suspension from the PGA, Greg Norman has come to their defence, saying that they should be allowed to play golf freely.
