In a perfect start to the New Year, Chris Kirk emerged as the winner of The Sentry. The American golfer who had been going through a rough patch claimed his sixth PGA Tour title following his triumph in Hawaii over the weekend.
Last year in February, Kirk claimed his first Tour victory since 2015 when he won the Honda Classic. He has now bagged the 2024 season’s first title as he pulled ahead of the other chasers in a close-fought event. This win has also seen him walk away with a prize money of $3.6 million.
The 38-year-old was in contention for the title from the early get-go and entered the final round tied for the lead with Sahith Theegala. The two golfers kept on pushing each other till the very end.
A masterful shoot at the 17th hole gave Kirk the edge over his fellow American. He would eventually go on to finish the day shooting 8-under 65 which saw him grab the win by one single stroke.
Fans react to Chris Kirk’s triumph at The Sentry
One thing that every person aims at at the start of the year is to achieve their goals. The goal for Chris Kirk was obvious, he wanted to win. The American golfer has started the 2024 season with a bang as he came out on top at The Sentry tournament.
For him, this triumph was more personal than anyone. This comes after he stepped away from the sport in 2019 due to issues regarding alcoholism and depression.
The fans were happy to see him emerge victorious at the first PGA Tour event of the year. Several social media users would send their congratulations to him. One fan would write, “Good comeback story” referring to his comeback to the sport after conquering some personal demons.

This victory has now opened the doors of the Masters tournament for Kirk. This comes as a welcome bonus for the win as he finished outside of the top 50 in rankings last season.
Whether he will defend the title next year is now something the fans are debating. The reason for this is that the previous two winners, Cameron Smith and Jon Rahm, both switched to LIV Golf thus disqualifying them from defending their title.
Will Kirk follow them or stay loyal to the PGA Tour and make a return to Hawaii in 2025 remains to be seen. Nonetheless, he would be hoping that this is just the start of his comeback journey as he looks forward to the other events this year.
