Climate activists have filled golf holes with cement to protest against the exemption of golf greens from water bans amidst the country’s drought. The group of French activists targeted sites near the city of Toulouse, calling golf the “leisure industry of the most privileged”. The exemption of water bans has sparked controversy as 100 French villages are now seemed to be left without water.

Golf officials on the other hand say that the greens would die without 3 days of water. “A golf course without a green is like an ice-rink without ice,” Gérard Rougier said according to BBC. He also added that 15,000 individuals worked on golf courses across the country. The recent move has targeted courses in the towns of Vieille-Toulouse and Blagnac.

In a petition, climate activists claim that “economic madness takes precedence over ecological reason”. While residents cannot water their gardens or wash their cars, the golf courses have been exempt from this strict rule. The water bans are decreed nationally, but enforcement is at the discretion of regional officials. So far only one area, Ille-et-Villaine in western France, has diverged, banning the watering of golf courses.

“We continue to protect the rich and powerful,” criticised the activists. The drought hitting France is really taking a toll on the country. Some restrictions however have been put into place for the golf courses. Watering must be carried out at night with no more than 30% of the usual volume of water.
