“Won’t be participating if they file a lawsuit”- Davis Love III responds to LIV Golf disruption

To bridge the gap that the LIV Golf Invitational Series has created, Davis Love III has an idea. The U.S. Presidents Cup team captain and World Golf Hall of Famer highlighted his displeasure with how LIV is displacing PGA Tour players and disturbing the sport in an interview with Sports Illustrated.
In order to encourage golf’s governing organizations to forbid LIV players from participating in them, he suggested that he might envision a scenario in which players boycott a major championship.

“Well, this is the biggest lever, and it’s not the nicest lever,” Love said to Sports Illustrated’s Michael Rosenberg, “but what if 150 Tour players align with a group of veterans and top current players, and we say, “Guess what? It’s resolved now that we’re not playing, right? We won’t be competing if LIV people compete in the U.S. Open. We won’t be participating if they file a lawsuit and prevail in court. You know, the U.S. Open won’t take place. It resembles a baseball strike exactly.”
Players who are competing in LIV have been given extended suspensions by the PGA Tour, which prevents them from competing in this year’s Presidents Cup, which is organized by the PGA Tour. Additionally, since players must obtain qualifications through Tour competitions and be PGA of America members, it makes it more difficult for them to compete in the Ryder Cup.
Despite acknowledging the inconvenience LIV Golf has brought, the PGA Championship, U.S. Open, and British Open nonetheless let qualifying players compete in their events this year. Phil Mickelson was not precluded from competing as a prior champion, according to Masters chairman Fred Ridley, back in April, despite the fact that the six-time major champion was unmistakably moving toward signing with LIV.
Love recalled their several messages with Mickelson, who ultimately became one of the first players to leave the game. Love has attempted to persuade players that they might be making a long-term error and has questioned if they would be okay with never again competing in the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup.
Love remarked, “Some of them comprehended it. Some of them believe that if they go to court or anything like that, they will win, and they will be allowed to return. They don’t appear to get that the rules are set by the players. So rather than relaxing the regulations, we can reinforce them, correct?” Love must know that players for both teams could leave before and after the FedEx Cup playoffs when he must make his captain’s selections for the U.S. President Cup team. Before the Presidents Cup, LIV has two September events.
