Donald Trump says “Human Rights issues exist in the US too”, goes on to defend LIV Golf Tour from the SAUDI-BACKING controversy

The LIV Golf League has had a wonderful first year in 2022 and its association with Donald Trump is well known. But, it has had an equal share of criticism, and not just constructive kind, but also an explosive one. The multi-million dollar league is funded by the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund and has poured truckloads of money into making it a success in spite of its deviation from the traditional format.

From making the prize money as large as $255 million dollars and even having to spend $125 million in bringing Dustin Johnson as the captain of the team league championship, they have done everything in their power and purses to be exact. Well, however costly an affair it might seem, the tag of being supported by a country that has severe human rights issues and violations does not seem to leave the league alone.

The backlashes at the players, the calling of names by media companies, and the rocky headlines- it seems to have endured it all. Donald Trump’s association with the LIV Golf League gave the critics another strong point for pulling them down. Donald Trump obviously tries to defend the league, but the critics this time have AGREED to his stand, which is kind of paradoxical in its own sense.

Donald Trump advocated the LIV Golf League’s Saudi association saying, “We have human rights issues in this country too,” trying to quash the allegations and downplaying the whole controversy. He also didn’t shy away from talking about the Saudi Arabian government’s stand on golf when asked by the reporters about the concerns and what his thoughts on them are.

He added, “Golf is very important to the Saudi Arabian government, they’re putting a lot of effort into it and a lot of money into it.” The line of conversations that followed were critics talking about the human rights concerns within the United States and pointing fingers at the Donald Trump Presidential era, who didn’t pay heed to the issues even then. “These people have great spirit, they’re phenomenal people and they have unlimited money — unlimited,” Trump said about the Saudi PIF Fund backing.

Sarah B. Snyder, a historian of US foreign relations at American University came on record to talk about Donald Trump’s flawed stance on human rights and that he has not been considerate about them while heading the government himself. The US record on — whether it’s human rights abuses, or military interventions overseas, or kind of robust, aggressive defense of US interests, or any country’s foreign policy interests — he didn’t see that the United States needed to necessarily uphold a different standard,” Snyder said adding that Trump has often been supportive of the oppressive regimes even in the past. It appears that Trump has defended the association but it to his own peril.
