“He can think whatever he wants”: Dustin Johnson’s nasty feud with Brooks Koepka takes a dig at golfer stats

The recent Saudi backed LIV Golf Series has caused quite the controversy in the golfing world. As golfers are clearly split about the situation, the 150th Open has served as an awkward interaction ground for both. Golfers like Dustin Johnson, Ian Poulter and Talor Gooch have been on the heavily criticised side of the play after joining the LIV Series. Yet, Johnson has played down the criticism that he has received during the week.

However, Johnson responded quite bluntly when asked whether he and his fellow LIV Golf stars will be able to perform this week. “I don’t really know what you’re talking about. Obviously they’re all good players and playing well this week. For me, coming in here, obviously it’s a major. I want to come in here and play well and compete. I feel like I put myself in a good position going into the weekend. Probably be a few back by the end of the day, I would imagine. Still in a good position heading into the weekend,’’ said Johnson according to Express UK.

However, this is not the first time that Johnson has gone on to speak bluntly, or face criticism. In 2020 golfer Brooks Koepka had spoken about Dustin Johnson prior to the PGA Championship. “I like my chances. When I’ve been in this position before, I’ve capitalised. I don’t know, Johnson’s only won one.” Johnson however, had a really clear answer to Koepka. “It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t bother me. He can think whatever he wants. I played really well. I mean, I played solid. Generally with the lead shooting 68 at a major on Sunday, nine times out of 10 you’re going to win.”

Later though, Koepka said that he regretted his comments, especially because he put excessive focus on Johnson and not on any other players. “That part I regret and I wish I had used different words because I didn’t pay enough attention to who was under Dustin because he was my main focus.”
