After what seemed he had missed his shot at glory, golfer Dustin Johnson made an incredible comeback. On Sunday, at the finals of the LIV Golf Tulsa, he overcame his triple bogey effort with a birdie in the 18th. This took him to the play-off round where he carded another birdie to record his first victory of 2023.

This win was Johnson’s second at the Saud–backed breakaway league. His first also came via a three-man play-off in Boston in 2022. This result made him just the third player to record multiple wins at a LIV event, joining Brooks Koepka and Talor Gooch. In a rain-delayed game, Johnson was able to take down British Open champion Cameron Smith and Brandon Grace.

Everything I could do wrong, I did wrong on the hole. To fight back and birdie 18 two times in a row when I had to, I’m really happy with that. This is definitely the biggest win of my career.”

This is just a historical win,” Johnson said after winning the tournament. As seen in every LIV Golf event, the winner takes home $4 million prize pool and so did Johnson on Sunday.

The ongoing war between the PGA and LIV is no secret. Ever since the LIV league came into creation, many players left the PGA to join the new establishment. This has sparked a wave of controversy and debates among golf fans around the world.

The relationship between the two leagues has affected the allotment of Official World Golf Ranking points (OWGR). LIV players do not receive these points which takes a big hit in their rankings.

The PGA Championships have continued to follow their rituals and traditions. For their next event at the Oak Hill County Club, the league has sent their invitation to the top 100 players in the OWGR.

As a result of this 18 players including Dustin Johnson are set to appear at the tournament. The number was cut down to 17 as Jason Dufner decided to withdraw his name from the competition.

When asked about how he intends to celebrate his victory, Johnson informed he will not be overdoing it. He mentioned his preparations for the next event as his answer to the question.

No not celebrating. I have to get back right to work,” he said. The PGA event will be hosted in Rochester, New York next weekend. Justin Thomas will enter the competition as defending champion and will be looking to make it back-to-back wins.
