4X Major winner Ernie Els absolutely blasts PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan on his merger move. Els states that he can’t even fathom such an incident taking place back in the day. Back in the day, none of the golfers would have ever accepted such a deal and would’ve asked Monahan to step down from his position, as per Els.

The merger between PGA Tour, LIV Golf, and DP World Tour on June 6, shook the whole golfing world and its effects are still in process. Players were absolutely kept in the dark about the merger when Monahan and Saudi governor Yasir Al-Rumayann decided to drop the bombshell. Even LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman was taken out of the equation.

Ernie Els’ discussed his thoughts on the merger deal during his appearance at 151st The Open. He called the Saudi-backed league “circus golf” while labeling the merger move as an “absolute shambles”. Els labeled Monahan as a hypocrite as he didn’t even bother discussing such an important move with his fellow Tour members.

Furthermore, Ernie Els was furious to know that Jay Monahan’s “sh**” move backstabbed Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy who fought for the Tour in the past 13 months. They’ve been the backbone of the Tour in their feud against LIV, but in the end, McIlroy was deemed as a “scapegoat” amidst the merger noise.

Els states that if this happened back in his day, not only will Jay Monahan be asked to leave but also “the board has to change. You do sh** like this. I’m sorry, it’s not right”. He went on slamming the PGA Tour CEO stating he not only should’ve discussed but also shouldn’t have come back after a “rogue” move with a sport-changing deal.

Els stated that grinding out in events, playing with legends like Tiger Woods, and aiming for The Majors was a thrilling experience. But now, with LIV’s emergence and merger noise, it has all gone down as a “circus golf”. Like Els, many players have noted their dissatisfaction, while some like Xander Schauffele talked about Monahan’s “broken trust.

Soon after the merger was announced, Monahan took leave from the media for a long time stating it was due to an unexplained medical emergency. They also didn’t want to be present for the merger hearing. As of now, there’s no official framework disclosed on how the sport of golf will turn out with the Tour and Saudi-league merging.
