“Have you ever been fat?”: From Tequila to bread, Sam Burns’ press conference might just be the craziest one witnessed in a while
Sam Burns
Press conferences are often known to be notorious for putting athletes and celebrities under fire. With dozens of reporters asking questions about stances and opinions, they can be quite difficult to handle well. However, this recent press conference with Sam Burns could not be classified as stressful- rather, it can only be classified as bizarre to say the least.
“Have you ever been fat?” was not the question Sam Burns was expecting to be asked after a pressure filled round at the FedEx St. Jude Championships. The conference started rather normally, with Burns speaking about his third round of golf. Suddenly a reporter asked Burns if he had gained any weight- after Scottie Scheffler and he ate so much on vacation that he gained 8 pounds.
The next question that came was even more bizarre- “Have you lost any of that?” The absurd question was answered by Sam Burns, probably quizzically, “I guarantee I probably lost a pound a day here just from water weight. I haven’t weighed since I was at home, but I probably lost a little of it,” according to Golf Digest.
“A lot of pita bread, hummus, some tequila”: Reporters will not stop questioning Sam Burns about his weight
Burns seemed to be ready to move on from the topic, but this particular reporter just would not let it go. “What position did you play in football?” another writer asked, trying to pick up a different point of view. When Burns said quarterback and safety, it was widely agreed that these were “skinny positions.”
The reporter asserted once again, “You were never fat.” To this Burns awkwardly replied, “I mean, everybody goes through the awkward phase at like 12, 13 where you look a little pudgy, but…” he said not really knowing what to do next. Now came the next ridiculous question, where the reporter asked, “Is there any adjustment to the added weight this weekend?” to which Burns replies hilariously, “Walk a little slower, I guess,”.
The main question for the golfer was though, what did he actually eat on vacation to gain so much weight? Burns replied with, “A lot of pita bread, hummus, some tequila,” he said, before clarifying that, “I didn’t eat tequila, drank tequila.” This reporter just would not give up, asking Sam Burns next, “Are you a dessert guy or more of a bread guy?”. Burns, visibly tired of the questions now said, “Oh, yeah, both,” said Burns, refusing to fall for the trap. “A lot of dessert.”
Finally, the conversation seemed to come to an end, with the public now knowing unnecessary information that Chocolate chip cookies are his favorite dessert item at the moment. A rather weird series of questions for a golfer playing a very important tournament.
