Hideki Matsuyama emerged as the champion of the 2024 Genesis Invitational. Securing his first victory of the season with a whopping $4 million payout from the tournament’s impressive $20 million purse awed the fans at Riviera. This win holds immense significance for Matsuyama and the tournament itself, as it boasts one of the largest prize money of the entire 2024 PGA Tour season.
The 31-year-old golfer from Japan showcased his skills at the Riviera Country Club, located just outside Los Angeles. With a remarkable bogey-free 9-under 62 on Sunday, and a 3-shot victory at 17-under par, the Japanese player snatch his 9th PGA Tour victory. As a result, Matsuyama will be taking home the prestigious top prize of $4 million, which is nearly double the amount he earned for his 2021 Masters triumph.
Not only did the top three players, including Will Zalatoris and Luke List, each pocket a handsome sum of $1.8 million. But even the trio who finished tied for fourth, including the 54-hole leader Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay, will be rewarded with a generous payout of $866,666 each. The tournament’s generosity extends further down the leaderboard, with every player within the top 36 receiving a minimum of $100,000.

Hideki Matsuyama emerged as the triumphant champion at the 2024 Genesis Invitational. His extraordinary performance in the final round, where he achieved a phenomenal 9-under 62, etched his name in history as the player with the lowest final-round score ever recorded in this prestigious tournament. His 3-shot comeback victory at 17-under par was something even the player himself did not expect.
Matsuyama’s 6-iron shot at the challenging 15th hole, which he executed flawlessly, left him satisfied with his performance. Despite battling a neck injury for the past two years, Matsuyama’s triumph marked his ninth win on the PGA Tour, surpassing Korea’s K.J. Choi to become the Asian-born male golfer with the most victories.
With a total score of 17-under 267 after 72 holes, he defeated Luke List and Will Zalatoris by three strokes. Matsuyama expressed his gratitude, acknowledging the moments of doubt he faced during his journey. Zalatoris, acknowledging Matsuyama’s exceptional play, commended him for his stellar performance.
