Fame, Fortune and Unforgettable experiences: How Netflix’s series ‘Full Swing’ will change the face of golf
Netflix's new series, Full Swing is looking to change the face of golf like no other, right from the hearts of pro golfers.
Full Swing
The face of golf is about to change. Netflix’s new golf documentary “Full Swing” takes on the biggest names of golf- and the pressures that come with it. The centre of professional golf come with a never-ending bout of intensity, rivalry and of course, respect. Director and producer Chad Mumm’s idea 2 years ago has finally taken shape- becoming a reality.
Justin Thomas was where the magic began- more precisely his 2017 PGA Championship Trophy. “It was way too big, by the way, to fit on his mantelpiece. Like, I swear, it was hanging over the edge.” The first hand view of the series comes straight from Justin Thomas. “We were sitting on a couch just discussing the idea and talking about how cool it could be for golf.”
“He just got it from the beginning,” Mumm said. “He understood what this was.” THIS has now become a full fledged 8 episode documentary, Full Swing. From Brooks Koepka to Dustin Johnson- the series follows the lives of some of the best golfers in the world. From the top of the leaderboard, to sitting on the sidelines- the series captures it all.
Taking place over 2 years, the series has managed to cover everything it can in 2021 and 2022. This also brings to life the uphill battle that has begun over the years- the birth of the Saudi backed LIV Series, LIV Golf. The Series split the golf world in 2, with defectors, loyalists and a whole lot of opinions.
Netflix’s series ‘Full Swing’ captures the hearts of golfers and fans alike
“It’s arguably the most exciting, controversial, and crazy year that the PGA Tour’s ever had,” said Thomas. “And, you know, Netflix and everybody around the world is going to get a front-row seat to it.” Things from the inside however has managed to provide a much more intense view of the series.
Mumm said that PGA Tour player Rickie Fowler “was really instrumental in helping us understand how to put ourselves in the right place in this world where we could actually capture the real life of it.” Fowler said that the series was an eye opener to the public that golfers are not any different. “You know, we’re just normal kids or guys that like to play golf. We just happen to be a little bit better at it than most people.”
‘Being normal’ just seems to be one of the goals of the golfers of the series. “I feel like I did a good job of just trying to be as normal as possible,” said golfer Tony Finau. In the series there is a special episode, known as the “Imposter Syndrome,”. It involves everything from self-deprecation to the pivotal White Claw– and an insight into Joel Dahmen’s life.
From tragedies to triumphs, the series captures it all. From laughter in victory, to tears in defeat these golfers have been through it all. Ian Poulter, Pat Perez, Rory McIlroy – you name it. “The golfers give an insight into life like no other. And as you see from the show, I mean, it paid off. He won a major in historic fashion, and we were there the whole time to see every piece of it.” said Mumm.
