“Focus on what really matters”- Jay Monahan writes to PGA Tour players after the LIV Golf court decision

On Tuesday, the PGA Tour and LIV Golf engaged in what is expected to be the first of many legal skirmishes between the two organisations. After attempting to sue their way into the FedEx Cup Playoffs on the PGA Tour, Talor Gooch, Matt Jones, and Hudson Swafford were unsuccessful in getting a ruling from Judge Beth Labson Freeman of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California in their favour.
A request for a temporary restraining order brought by the trio against the Tour as part of a bigger antitrust case was submitted the previous week. Because they had already earned a qualifying spot prior to being suspended for competing in a LIV Golf event, the three golfers argued that they should be allowed to continue competing in the playoffs even though they were disqualified from doing so because of their participation in a LIV Golf competition.
“I appreciate everything you have done for the PGA Tour”: Jay Monahan
This would cause them irreparable financial harm, according to their argument. However, Freeman made a decision that went in favour of the Tour. After the decision was made, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan communicated with players in a memo. Additionally, on Tuesday afternoon, a statement was issued by LIV Golf.
A portion of what Monahan said was as follows: “With the news that was announced today, our players, fans, and partners can now focus on what really matters over the next three weeks, the best players in the world competing in the FedEx Cup Playoffs and capping off an incredibly compelling season with the crowning of the FedEx Cup champion at the Tour Championship.”
