6x PGA Tour winner Jimmy Walker slammed Wyndham Clark for commenting on how only the top 100 players should get Tour cards. A few weeks ago, Clark suggested it’ll be good to see the Tour reduced to only 100 players. But his thoughts were immediately shut down by Walker, who heavily disagreed with his comment.
According to Walker, if the Tour does reduce to 100 players then “he (Wyndham Clark) may not have gotten to where he’s at today.” He also included himself in the narrative, following his last year’s finish at 124th. He was also frustrated to learn the PGA Tour has changed its rule that only the top 70 can retain their FedEx Cup status. Earlier it used to be top 125.
As per reporter Ben Parsons of Bukered, Walker further criticized Clark’s recent comments on the top players. He stated, “It’s a lot for Wyndham Clark to start barking orders.” Walker expressed disappointment in how the Tour is now providing fewer opportunities for membership compared to its earlier state. “It’s gone completely the opposite way,” he said.
Jimmy Walker disappointed in Jay Monahan’s PGA Tour leadership over merger deal
American pro golfer Jimmy Walker did not back away from brutally calling out PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan on his recent actions in a merger deal discussion. The news about the merger broke out first on June 6, 2023, tilting the golf world overnight.
As per reports in December, talks about the merger should’ve reached a conclusion by the last week of the month, but unfortunately, till now there’s been no definitive answer. In the latest Player Championship press conference, Monahan claimed the discussion on the PGA-LIV merger is “accelerating”.
Given the blurry situation on the PGA future, many golfers have called out Monahan asking for “transparency”. Some fans even stated that he should retire given his actions as PGA Tour head so far. Walker unloaded on Monahan saying he does not pay attention to him anymore now.
He blasted the Tour for keeping “us in the dark” in merger discussions, saying the organization heads have handled the situation “extremely poorly.” Following his doubt on the PGA Tour heads, he said,
I really don’t think we’ve got some of the best and brightest working on it.Jimmy Walker on X.
He said, like every other sport, golf should also have an offseason to rest and come back with stronger swings and shots. Walker notes that this schedule is not only harmful to the player’s body but also hurts their personal relationships. “They’re just milking us for everything,” he says.
Following Monahan’s recent comment on the merger, it seems there’ll be a discussion soon. The players’ directors will be meeting the Saudi-backed league’s chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan next week. Although the players are not happy with the current state of golf, everyone is waiting to hear what the future will be for PGA and LIV players following the merger signing.
