In the world of professional sports, the money involved in them usually attracts a lot of headlines. Fans are sometimes stunned to learn about the figures. Golf, one of the most popular sports, also includes huge money. Whether it’s the PGA Tour or their rival LIV Golf, the prize pool along with other endorsements sees a golfer earn a huge sum of bucks if they perform well. One such person who was shocked by this hearing is Joe Rogan.
Rogan is a renowned figure in UFC history. The 56-year-old has made his name for his role as the color commentator and podcaster. His show, “The Joe Rogan Experience” is a well hit among fans. On this show, he usually talks about different topics. He once discussed the amount of money golfers make despite not having much knowledge about the sport. It was fair to see he was stunned to hear the amount Phil Mickelson makes.
Mickelson also known as “The Lefty” is another big name in sports. His numerous records and tour wins have made him one of the most successful golfers in the history of the game. He has also made huge money through it and by joining the LIV Golf, the Saudi-backed tour, Mickelson’s income and Net worth have seen a steady rise.
When Rogan found out that the golfer was the top earner in golf according to renowned Forbes in 2016, he was moved back. He reportedly made around $52.9 million that year. However, only $2.9 million was made through playing while the other huge part came as endorsements. “It’s amazing how much money those f******g golfers make,” Rogan said while finding out how much Mickelson and other golfers make.
Phil Mickelson continues to remain a top earner in golf
The name of Phil Mickelson has continued to shine and dominate the golf world despite not registering wins recently. The six-time major champion may have endured a hard time on the greens recently, but that has not stopped him from making huge bucks. He is the PGA Tour’s second-highest earner when it comes to money made by wins. He though has made more from his sponsorships and endorsement deals.
According to Forbes, he was the second-highest-paid golfer in the world in 2023 trailing only another LIV golfer, Dustin Johnson. He himself has claimed that he has made over a billion dollars through golf. He was also ranked in the seventh position in the list of the top ten highest-paid athletes of the last decade with $480 million.
Though Mickelson did lose several sponsors following his comment against Saudi Arabia, he still comfortably sits in the top half of the charts for the highest-paid earners. The prize money in events has also been increased in recent times. Recently Viktor Hovland, the FedEx Cup champion, pocketed $18 million from the Tour Championship purse. This steady rise in prize money has made golfers some of the highest earners in the world and with the merger of PGA and LIV, the list could grow even further.
