“I’m going to be blunt” – Jon Rahm blasts the DP World Tour in regards to the OWGR points

Jon Rahm has been in the news owing to various reasons but his recent gimmick involving the new world ranking system has quite some drama associated with it. Rahm terms the new system “laughable” as the new method put only half points from the finale of the DP World Tour as compared to the actual points that would have been awarded in an event sanctioned by the PGA Tour.

Currently sitting at no. 5 in world rankings, Rahm is one of the top names present in Dubai competing in the DP World Tour Championship with a mammoth $10m prize money. The leading professional tour in Europe sanctioned by PGA has around 50 golfers fighting for the top spot

The best eight players from the top 30 including world no. 1 – Rory Mcllroy are battling it out at the Jumeirah Golf Estates – Earth Course in Dubai. The PGA Tour might be feeling complex when compared to this as the RSM Classic happening in Georgia has Tony Finau as the highest-ranked player at no. 12.

Jon Rahm put it quite bluntly when ranting about the current situation regarding the OWGR points. “I’m going to be as blunt as I can, I think the OWGR right now is laughable. I understand what they are trying to do with the depth of field but having the best players in the world automatically makes the tournament better”.

The OWGR Points have been in the news ever since players involved with events under LIV Golf were denied ranking points as a punishment for their switch to the cash-rich golf circuit. Although this time Rahm’s issue was with the method involved in awarding points. “I don’t care what their system says. I think they have made a mistake. I think some aspects of it might be beneficial but I think they have devalued the value of the better players” – stated Rahm.

“The 30 best players of the year should not be punished because it’s a smaller field. Depth of field doesn’t mean a better tournament” – added Rahm to his previous statement. At present, the ranking points are decided on the basis of the strength of the tournament’s field rating. The DP World Tour will have 22 points given to the champion from a total of 121 points.
