Two days of action-filled entertainment at the 151st British Open reached their peak as golfers battled hard. The Open Championship at the Royal Liverpool witnessed plenty of drama through the first 36 holes. There were some surprises as well as many who struggled on the course. Former world number one and current Masters champion Jon Rahm was one of those who struggled. On Saturday, he turned things around in style with a record-breaking performance.

The Spaniard had a tough time during the first two days. He was spotted losing his temper and using some improper language when he missed the putt before. Going into round three, the 28-year-old knew he had to produce something special. Rahm’s score of eight-under 63 is the tournament’s best ever at the Royal Liverpool course.

“That’s the best round of golf I’ve played on a links golf course ever,” Rahm said after his dominating display. He added that he has given himself the best opportunity possible. “I’ve done what I needed, which is give myself an opportunity,” he quoted. Following his majestic outing on Saturday, he climbed up to third on the leaderboard, breathing heavily on the neck of current leader, Brian Harman.

At the start of the round, he was 10 strokes behind Harman. Following the conclusion of round three, Rahm now trails the leader by five shots and sits one shot behind Cameron Young for the second spot. Only once in the history of golf has a player recovered from a 10-stroke deficit. It came all the way back in 1920, so Rahm would probably still need a miracle to overcome this.

After the end of round two, several marquee figures failed to make the cut. As some of them bowed out of the competition, a few others were struggling to jump over the cut line. Current world number one Scottie Scheffler and reigning Open champion Cameron Smith barely made it. Therefore, seeing the likes of Jon Rahm did not come as a surprise to many.

However, on Saturday, Rahm brought out his best game. This is the 14th instance in Open history and the first at Royal Liverpool to see a player notch a score of 63 or better in any round. This score was also the lowest he has managed in his entire career. Twitter was full of praise for Rahm and here are a few reactions regarding this historic event.

While Rahm has claimed four victories on the PGA Tour, this year has seen both highs and lows for him. Following his incredible victory at the Masters, he has finished in top 10 in just two times. This time he is set to claim a far better position than these. His victory would need a miracle as Harman looks dialed in to sweep home the prize.
