It seems the first round of The Open Championship has not turned positive for World No.3 Jon Rahm. The Spaniard has been dealing with much drama on the greens with the media being right “on my a**”. This is certainly not the first incident where Rahm snapped at media people on the field.
Earlier in May, he blasted an ESPN cameraman for getting too close to him, “Stop aiming at my face when I’m mad”. This time too, not only were there people blocking Rahm’s way but also people who were following Rory McIlroy disturbed his pace.
Rahm did not hold back his frustration when stating that “there’s too many people in my way and I can’t go at my pace”. He further said that there were people keeping up with McIlroy’s pace and it hindered him, making him feel insignificant. “Somebody with a boom mic on my a** keeping up with Rory’s pace…that’s kind of the disregard that I existed.”
Jon Rahm frustrated with his performance at The Open Championship
Jon Rahm had been struggling in the first round with the unlucky 18 taking the highest spot. Following a 333-yard drive into the fairway, Rahm’s ball landed in a tricky spot where he had to forcibly accept and play, carding a 6 on the hole. Although Rahm had his worst time, Justin Thomas just took the crown.
JT scored his career-worst with an 82. Rahm is expected to pull off his play on Friday where he’ll be teeing it up with Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose. Apart from unlucky tees, the Spaniard also had to deal with an accidental tee shot that hit a player hard.
The fan was left bloodied after Rahm’s errant shot hit him on the head. It was a tee shot on the 12th hole where the 28-year-old golfer hit the ball way off the target and the fan paid the high price. It was not the first time that one of his shots hit a bystander.
In 2022, Rahm hit ESPN’s anchor Sage Steele with an errant tee shot that knocked the anchor’s teeth, leaving her bloodied. In the recent incident, Rahm along with the medical crew went up to the fan and offered him help. The fan was fully conscious and even got a signed glove as a form of apology.
