It is never too late to learn anything. The same rule goes for golfer Jordan Spieth, who came across unexpected rules during 2023 Phoenix Open that left him shocked. During the first round of the Open Spieth this is par-3 ball on the 4th hole into the gallery, releasing a slew of new and unexpected rules to be put into action.

Spieth was seen standing near where the ball had landed, with a smile on his face. Suddenly, the crowd erupted in boos, leaving the audience at home surprised. Soon an ESPN reported explained what the issue was. “The gentleman that it hit, he was sitting there right next to the ball. And Jordan Spieth walked over and he picked it up and gave it to him.”

If the spectator did really hand the ball over to Spieth, then that spells trouble. The jeering was for the fan who had given the ball to Spieth. He might have thought that he was helping, but instead he opened up a very complicated set of rules to be followed.

“He wanted to give it to Jordan. So that makes things a little tricky,” further explained the commentator. Spieth decided to wait for the ruling officials to come and explain the situation to him, while the other members in his group continued their game. He started talking to the spectator to figure out what had happened.

“I was sitting here, and it landed in my hand,” said the spectator. Spieth asked him whether he caught the ball or not. The spectator said yes, and then went on to explain why he threw the ball. “Then someone yelled to drop it, so I threw it (intelligible).”

So it landed on him, and then it stuck there and he had it in his hand. So I’m trying to figure out exactly where that was.” After speaking to the spectator, a few other fans also chipped in to help find exactly where the ball fell.

After finally finding the position the golfer dropped and chipped in. Spieth was 2 under at that time. The spectator who caught the ball at the Phoenix Open was later given a glove by Spieth. “That fan thought he was coming to watch some golf and ended up being perhaps a part of an important ruling,” said the reporter.
