The recently concluded Open Championship witnessed several twists and turns along the way. As big names continued to push forward, the underdog, in the form of Brian Harman emerged. The 36-year-old stunned everyone with his dominating victory. However, the center of attention was former world number one Justin Thomas, who had his worst performance.

The American struggled at the final holes and saw an early exit as he failed to make the cut. Some people were left annoyed with his performance and called him “overrated”. Since then, several stars, including Rory McIlroy and Zach Johnson, have come forward in his support. Thomas is now eyeing the 3M Open to reignite his season as he prepares for the FedEx and a potential Ryder Cup qualification.

The year has not been a great one for him at Major Championships. The two-time Major champion failed to make the cut at the Masters and the US Open with this recent performance. He finished 65th at the PGA Championship. On Thursday, he will head to the 3M Open for the first time in his career. Thomas’ performances this year have seen him drop off the FedEx Cup rankings.

I really feel like great things are coming. Obviously I’ve had not very many results or not much positives to show,” Thomas said in press convention. “Feels like I’m very very close,” he added, hoping this is the week where it “clicks”. The question regarding his participation at the Ryder Cup has risen as well, as Thomas has fallen down the standings. He now will be hoping to improve that and hope captain Zach Johnson picks him for the tournament. (H/T: Businesslend)

How can Justin Thomas salvage his season?

A player going through a bad phase in his career is nothing wrong. Every athlete undergoes this phase once in their life. Their ability to bounce back from these setbacks is what makes them great. Justin Thomas has been one of the recent greats. His recent struggles would likely raise concerns for the fans, however, he is determined to mount a comeback.

The first thing that he would be looking forward to on Thursday is the FedEx Cup playoffs. Thomas is currently ranked 75th in the season-long standings which would see him miss the cut. The top 70 players will qualify for the event. As time is running out, a good performance at the 3M Open and the Wyndham Championship, the following week, will increase his chances of qualifying.

A strong outing at these two events will see him climb up the rankings. It will also bring back his lost confidence and momentum, which would make him a likely candidate to be picked for the Ryder Cup. He was a key member of the team in the last two editions, as he was the top scorer in the 2018 event for his team.
