On Tuesday, golf audiences across the USA stood firm holding their breath as Zach Johnson showed up at their screens. The golfer is the captain of Team USA at the Ryder Cup next month. While there were some cheers as he announced the picks, there were some who were left disappointed. One of them was Keegan Bradley who was reported to be left emotional following his snub.
As per the qualification process, the top six in the standings automatically qualify for the tournament. The next six who are ranked 7th and below are picked by the captain. Bradley was ranked 11th in the standings and was thus hoping to be picked by Johnson. Unfortunately for him, he was not selected and will have to wait for another year to be in contention again.
Bradley had a great time at the 2012 Ryder Cup when he paired up with veteran Phil Mickelson. The duo were seen in a great mood and played with confidence during that event. A lot has changed since then and Bradley thinks he is an “outsider” now.
“I’ve always been an outsider in the sport but I have tried to get closer to the guys I thought would be on the team,” Bradley said in his message. He would praise the skills of Johnson as a leader but did mention that he is “super bummed out” for not making the team. A shocking factor was that despite his wins this year he was not included, whereas Justin Thomas who is struggling for form was picked up.
Keegan Bradley believes he has to automatically qualify for the next Ryder Cup
As the date for the announcement grew closer, there were some who knew that would get the short end of the stick. Despite the collective talent they all possess, only a few were going to make it, leaving someone heartbroken. Unluckily for Keegan Bradley, he was one of those to suffer this setback. He now believes that he has to automatically qualify next time around.
Players who show great performances in events, especially in the majors receive good amounts of points. Despite winning two times this year including the Travelers Championship, Bradley was unable to gather enough points to be in the top six. This led to him not booking an automatic place and being dependent on someone else pick.
In the statement that he released following his snub, he mentioned how he is getting really close. “I feel like moving forward I’m going to have to automatically qualify for the Ryder Cup,” he said. He later added how he will be cheering from the side for the others who will be participating this year.
How will Bradley bounce back from this setback will be fascinating to see. The 2011 PGA Championship winner will have to wait till 2025 and hope for much better performances if he were to make a third appearance at the prestigious event.
