LIV Golf kicked off its 14-event schedule for 2024 at Mayakoba, Mexico on 2nd Feb, and naturally, every golfer in the league has traveled to the El Camaleon Golf Club to showcase their on-course prowess. However, the conditions of the tournament are not looking up from the beginning.
LIV Golf almost had to postpone the opening round of its first event of the 2024 season due to a food poisoning incident. There was a lot of doubt and uncertainty at the start of the tournament after reports of sickness spreading around the league’s players, caddies, and managers, with around 20 said to be suffering.
However, Friday went on quite smoothly without any hindrance. This news first came into the picture when Flushing It tweeted on X about players feeling unwell due to food poisoning before the start of the round.
Some reports also suggested that more than half of the league’s field has been suffering from stomach ache. But later the news came that Not a single player wanted the game to stop.
LIV Golf marks the beginning of the 2024 season
There are going to be wild card entries of players this season. They will be competing individually without being a part of any team. The two wild card players announced by LIV Golf are Hudson Swafford and Laurie Canter. Hudson will be playing the whole season as a wild card but Canter only committed to the first two events.
Players like Tyrrell Hatton and Caleb Surratt will be making their debut. They will be captained by the World No.3 Jon Rahm, they all will be playing for Legion XIII. This could be a side to watch for as they have the potential for clinching the title.
This year, due to two wild card entries at each event the field size will increase from 48 to 52 as compared to last year. And it’s been a talk going outside that Anthony Kim may join at the third event of LIV in Saudi Arabia. But officials have nothing to say regarding that.
This time around not every team will be going through to the final team championship. The seeding of the top 12 teams will be done according to their point total for the year, and the 13th-place team will be knocked out from the final. As far as the prize money is concerned, the winner will be taking a payout of $4 million and $120,000 for the individual finishing at the 48th place.
