LIV Golf vs PGA Tour: CEO Greg Norman to lobby for LIV Golf in Capitol Hill
LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman has been lobbying about the league all over the golfing world.
The controversial LIV Golf International Series is grabbing headlines again. The rival league to the PGA Tour is backed by the Saudi Group and is pretty happening, already, for the fans. This venture has been backed by none other than LIV Golf Investments and CEO Greg Norman.
However, many in the golfing world, including the PGA Tour, are not impressed with the new league due to the involvement of Saudi money. The PGA Tour has been pretty vocal against it from last year. Frustrated with their stance, the LIV players have already dragged the PGA Tour court.
Greg Norman hoping to educate members about LIV Golf
“LIV Golf is coming to the Hill this week to meet with lawmakers from both parties,” LIV’s chief spokesperson, Jonathan Grella, told CNBC. “Given the PGA Tour’s attempts to stifle our progress in reimagining the game, we think it’s imperative to educate members on LIV’s business model and counter the Tour’s anti-competitive efforts.”
Going by latest reports, LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman is set to visit Capitol Hill this week for a scheduled meeting the Congress members. The agenda is to find a solution and make people understand from both the leagues that things can work out.
It is also reported that during this visit, Norman will be meeting a few lawmakers to think ahead. Representative Nancy Mace, R-N.C., and Jimmy Panetta, D-Calif, lead the informal Congressional golf leaders.
After there were reports that Greg Norman will be in Capitol this week, CNN approached PGA Tour for a reaction but they remained tight-lipped. Representatives for Mace and Panetta were not keen to react. They are likely to speak to the press at the right time.
When LIV Golf came into the picture, its first objective was to be a healthy competitor to the PGA Tour. The league is financed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, which has been in news in the sporting world for all wrong reasons.
Since its inception, they have already lured star golfers such as Phil Mickelson from the PGA Tour. Not to forget, Norman himself is a former PGA star.
Jay Monahan, who is the PGA Tour Commissioner, has been pretty vocal against LIV. “We welcome good, healthy competition. The LIV Saudi Golf League is not that. It’s an irrational threat, one not concerned with the return on investment or true growth of the game,” Monahan told reporters earlier this year.
